A derivation from Thrace may explain the highest equestrian standard
achieved by the Veneti. In classical literature their name is often
linked with references to their ability as horse breeders and trainers.
After Homer, they were celebrated by Euripides and Strabo, by Pindar and
Alcman. Venetic horses brought the Spartans their first victory in the
Olympic games; Venetic horses were also imported to Sicily to improve
the local breed, whichlater became famous.
...it seems that in Venetic society riding played a more important part than elsewhere.
